What are curses and bondages? – (CB5)

CHAPTER FIVE –  What are curses and bondages?
Everything has a cause.  Proverbs 26:2 says, “Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, so a curse without cause shall not alight.” Nothing results without an original cause.  There is a time, there is a place and there are reasons for curses to come into existence and begin their evil of hindering or destructive power to work.
A Curse is evident in a person’s life by continual defeat, unseen resistance that seems to hinder his every decision and there seems no obvious reason why. Patterns of struggle are evident in the family whether it is inherited sicknesses, failures, financial lack or loss, broken marriages, family fragmentation, frequent accidents and untimely deaths.
A Definition of a curse – by Derek Prince
A curse or a blessing is a word spoken with some particular form of spiritual power and authority either for good or evil that sets in motion something that will probably go on from generation to generation.
It has three attributes:
  1. Pronounced audibly (can be written or wished as well)
  2. Continues on in time – generation to generation
  3. Usually, are not just individual, but family-oriented
Curses and bondages are also evil conditions created by forces released in the spiritual realm that comes into operation when anyone violates, breaks, or disobeys the laws of God.  When God’s laws are broken or transgressed, there is a hindering, a withholding or withdrawal of God’s blessings and favor.
Or it can also happen when some evil power is invoked to bring harm to any unsuspecting and unprotected person by the servants and agents of the devil such as witches etc. Curses can also be placed over marriages, families, articles, houses, buildings, land, business etc.
Possessing any article or property that has been used for evil purposes such as the occult, false  religion, idolatry, crime, stolen, defiled or unclean which have been used for evil purposes can carry with it curses.
Articles that carry images that are evil, images of demons or pictures of demon gods can bring great evil and harm to the possessor.
People who possess items or property (land or houses) that are cursed can suffer great harm.
When God’s laws are violated, curses are released. They stop, block, harm, hurt or destroy that person or anyone connected to or with that person. Like Achan and his sin, he lost out from living under and enjoying the goodness and blessings of God. Because of Achan’s sin, the rest of Israel suffered defeat. God had promised the greatest blessings upon Israel but because there was sin in the camp, it hindered God’s blessing from taking effect. Simply, obedience brings blessings; disobedience brings curses. Later, we see his whole family was destroyed.  The sin or the sinning person was to be removed. God’s righteous judgment comes upon all who violate His commandments.  There is no smoke without a fire. There is no curse without a cause.
When a member of a family or group (i.e. church) sins, the whole family or group suffers.  Until and unless the sin is dealt with, the curse will operate and continue in its path of destruction.
There is a great need in the Christian Church to study the subject of curses and bondages, seeing that vast numbers of believers suffer from myriads of problems and that are often insurmountable.  There seems to be as if there are powerful forces at work, though unseen but are bent on stopping, hindering and  limiting God’s people from enjoying the abundant life promised by Christ  in John 10:10.
The Bible records curses by God, generational, personal sin curses, curses by prophets, curses by men and curses by the servants of Satan, just as there are also a vast number of blessings God wants us to choose. God wants blessings and life and not curses and death for us. In Deuteronomy 30: 19 God says, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; there choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”
We all live with the results of our actions. Blessings are the result of obeying God. Curses are the result of obeying the Devil (instead of obeying God).
We have already seen the blessings in the Garden – now begins the curses of God (Gen. 3:16-19). Pain in childbearing is not the only thing that women suffer from. The ground is cursed because man gave heed to his wife and obeyed her against God’s commandments. Women suffer as they endure the hard, back-breaking or stressful life to eke out a living from the ground and the world that is cursed. There is also the subjection and cruelty of being under the power of the man. And so began the power struggle that all men and women engage in.
In Deut 28, the Bible describes the list of blessings and curses recorded in Holy Scripture. Almost all blessings and curses in this chapter can be categorized in three major areas of one’s life that affect body, soul and spirit. I have looked at some teaching recently in my studies on different kinds of curses and an interesting breakdown similar to my own studies on this subject we are discussing in Deut. 28, has also been taught to some degree by Derek Prince. I have found his teaching on curses and blessing to be some of the best I have read or heard preached.
Remember the number one reason curses can happen is:
Deut. 28:15  –  “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:”
This verse is a major eye opener. It informs us how the door is opened for curses to enter into our lives. It may be disobedience to God’s moral laws or disobeying the principles of giving and tithing or disobedience in our devotion or not obeying a specific word and strategy we received from the Lord. Too many times it is un-confessed or ongoing hidden sin or sins in some specific area in our lives.
It is important to seek the Lord if you sense that if an area of your life or ministry is being affected by a curse; that you ask the Lord to reveal that open door through which the enemy has come in with a legal right to torment you. Remember what the apostle Paul said in Ephesians, “Nor give place to the devil”. The word “place” means inroads, avenues or opportunities.
If disobedience brings curses and keeps you in a state of bondage, then imagine what obedience would bring – God’s favor and blessings or a state of blessedness.
Deut. 28:1 – 13    lists the specific blessings of God. The blessings listed in these verses affect our lives in these areas: Exaltation, Divine Health, Fruitfulness, Prosperity, Favor and Victory. These blessings are similar to the blessing of Abraham. If you are redeemed from the curse of the law then you are made to receive the blessing of Abraham. What is the blessing of Abraham?
Abrahams blessing was similar to the blessings in Deut. 28. They are found here:
Genesis 12: 2 – “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing”.
1. I will make you a great nation (fruitful).
2. Make your name great (exaltation & favor).
3.  You will be a blessing (financial, possessions). God made Abraham very rich in gold and livestock.
Then here in Gen 24:35 Abraham’s steward says – “The Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys”.
  1. Victory and not defeat. (Gen 14:20) Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.
  2. Another blessing was the Presence of God (Gen 26:3). God said to Isaac, “I will be with you!”
Then you read again in Gen 28:15  –  “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
All these blessings were passed on to Isaac and then to Jacob and all the descendants of Abraham (All Families). Genesis 12:3 – “And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Christian nations are the richest nations because they are the descendants of Abraham through faith.
Blessings or curses are experienced according to our choice.  We can choose.  There is good and evil.  There is the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (which is the tree of death). Choosing to walk under God’s divine protection by obeying His commandments and keeping His ways will keep evil and trouble out of our lives. God had only intended to bless us when He created man upon the Earth (Gen 1: 28) and even after the Fall and through the redemptive work of Jesus (Gal 3:13, 14),  in Ephesians 1:3 God says, “ Blessed be God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings (given by the Holy Spirit) in heavenly places in Christ .”
The main vehicle of both blessings and curses are words – spoken, written or uttered inwardly.
James 3:10 – (The power of the tongue) “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.  My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
Proverbs 18:21 says, “Life and death is in the power of the tongue.”
There are two forces that determine our lives; the visible and the invisible.  We often only take note of the first, but the second is also there.  Both blessings and curses belong to the invisible, spiritual realm.  This is an area about which we would have very little understanding. They are vehicles of supernatural or spiritual power.  Blessings produce good and beneficial results; curses produce bad and harmful results.
Deuteronomy Chapters 27 and 28 speaks a lot about blessings and curses.  Basically, if you obey God and His laws, you will be blessed.
Deut. 28: 1-14 gives a summary of blessings that come upon us as a result of obedience.  Two important things must be noticed:-
Firstly, God says, “All these blessings ….” and not just some.
Secondly, that “These blessings shall come upon you and overtake you.
“These Blessings” are a certainty and they have already been prepared even before you need them. Compare 1 Corinthians 1:9 and Philippians 4:19
A summary of these blessings are in the following categories:-
  1. Exaltation
  2.  Prosperity
  3. Health
  4. Victory
  5. Re-Productiveness
  6. God’s Favor
But if you do not: –
Likewise Deuteronomy 28 gives a summary of curses that would follow as a result of disobedience.  The list is about 5 times more than blessings. Verse 15 warns us to take heed.
Deuteronomy 28:15 –    “If you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and  overtake you.”     (Ref – Psalms 1:1,2;  Jer. 15:17 ; Prov.4:14)
Just as blessings come upon us for obedience, so curses comes upon us for disobedience.  Here it states the certainty of curses coming upon us and without doubt would overtake us.  They have already been prepared and will come into operation the moment we violate the commandments of God.  They will be in operation even before you experience them.
A Summary of these curse are in the following categories:-
  1. Humiliation
  2. Barrenness / Unfruitfulness
  3. Poverty
  4. Mental / Physical Sickness
  5. Family Fragmentation
  6. Oppression
  7. Defeat
  8. Failure
  9. God’s Disfavor
List of  Personal Sins that Releases God’s Curses :

  • Disobedience concerning the Law of God
  • Making Idols
  • Dishonoring and striking parents
  • Dishonesty, Treachery, Betrayal
  • Harming and hurting and refusing to help the helpless poor, the blind, widows, orphans and the oppressed.
  • Not providing justice or being just
  • Sexual sins
  • Murder
  • Robbing God (Malachi 3: 9)
  • Stealing (Zechariah 5: 4)
  • Misuse of the Tongue (mouth) to speak lies or evil (slander, gossip) (Zech. 5:4)
  • Taking or giving bribes
  • Not coming to the Lord’s help (Judges 5:23)
  • Not keeping the Covenant (Jeremiah 11:3)
  • Not trusting the Lord (Jeremiah 17:5)
These are just a sampling of the multitude of sins that can bring a curse into operation. Reading and studying the only authoritative book in the world, the Bible, God’s Holy Word, can tell you clearly how to avoid all sins and evil that would bring curses into our lives.
Some curses affect people to the third and fourth generations; and sometimes they last for a long of period of time.
Joshua 6: 26 – “Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises and builds this city Jericho” – this lasted 500 years.
Curses take away the quality of life.  They are temporal in nature causing much grief. They are also administered to get our attention and encourage us to turn back to God.  Those who are humbled by them should repent and find restoration and renewed freedom from God.  Those who become angry, self-righteous and rebel against what has happened to them go deeper into bondage and darkness. The strength of curses can be recognized by the resultant conditions.  They can increase in strength or power in their evil potency.
God wants to shed light on the hidden causes of defeat in our lives and families.
As we discover the truth of God’s Word and apply it to our lives, we will establish a tradition of blessing for our present and future generations – a life of abundance, fulfillment and victory in Christ – for our children and our children’s children and for generations to come.  (Ref: Deut. 11:26-28; Deut. 7:9; 2 Cor.6:14)
